Look, Cameron Cash: Did you get some?

Oxford street was a wash with Cameron Cash on March 26th as Take Vat were giving it away! Like David Cameron’s prommisis its worthless but its the thought that counts, right?

Cameron Cash is unique in that not only do you now hake a picture of David Cameron in your poket to do as you will to, the Back is packed with our meesage, We Pay Why don’t They?

on the back they read

Aviation pays NO VAT and NO fuel duty.  It costs the public £10 Billion a year.

Another example of how our tax system is benefitting the rich at the expense of the poor. If aviation were to pay VAT and fuel duty the person on an average wage would be £500 better off

The people who benefit most from these tax-breaks are the richest 10% who fly 6 to 7 times a year.

These tax-breaks are unfair and drain money away from the public purse.

They amount to over 20% of the austerity cuts the Government wants to make

Today we are faced with higher fuel tax, more expensive public transport and cuts to vital public services.

This Tax regime has got to stop. TakeVAT

We pay, Why don’t they?

Why we’re going to Oxford Street

It is a surprising and shocking fact.  Airlines pay no VAT.  And it gets worse.  There is no tax on aviation fuel.  So, at a time when VAT has gone up to 20% and petrol is so pricy that motorists are nicking it from filling stations, one of the noisiest and dirtiest industries in the world is getting away scot-free.

We are in Oxford Street on Saturday to do something about it.  Watch out for us!  We’ll be doing something fun at the aviastion industry’s expense.

The tax-breaks cost the country a fortune.  Around £9 billion a year.  That’s over 20% of the cuts the coalition Government is looking to make.

Of course the aviation industry does pay some tax.  It complains loud and long about the rate of Air Passenger Duty.  But let’s look at the facts. The total revenue from air passenger duty in 2011-12 is forecast at £3 billion. The Treasury estimated in October 2009 that the loss of revenue as a result of no fuel tax and no VAT on airlines was at least £10 billion a year.  With the increase in fuel tax and VAT since then, the figure must now be around £12 billion.  To achieve fair tax with motorists, air passenger duty would need to be quadrupled!

And the big winners from these tax breaks are the rich.  Not the poor who hardly fly in comparison.  Not even the middle-income families who scrape money together for the occasional trip abroad.  It is the top 10% of income earners who gain most – the people who fly abroad on average 6 or 7 times a year.  The people who fly to Paris for lunch, to Portugal for a weekend of golf or to their second home nestling amongst the expensive villas of Nice or Monte Carlo.

Just think what £9 billion each year could buy for poor communities.  Good sound insulation in social housing.  A nationwide programme of disability access.  Decent bus services.  More affordable train services.

The list could go on and on.  Make no mistake about it.  The aviation industry is stealing from the nation.  On a scale the great train robbers could only have dreamt about.  Let’s steal it back from them.  TakeVAT!

Watch out for us on Oxford Street on Saturday!  TakeVAT!

TakeVAT Strikes Again

TakeVAT, Have struck again. This morning we “subvertised” an advertising billboard on a busy South London street, as part of our campaign highlighting the fact that the aviation industry pays no VAT.

The aviation industry pays no VAT.  Officially.  There is no VAT charged on airline tickets or the purchase of aircraft, despite being “luxury goods” which VAT is designed to tax .  It is simply unfair that one of the dirtiest and noisiest industries in the world pays no VAT when it has gone up to 20% for all of us and for the rest of business and industry.

We pay.  Why don’t they?

But it is even worse than this.  The aviation industry pays no tax on its fuel either, yet we pay it on petrol.  These tax-breaks cost the country £10 billion a year.  The person on an average wage forks out an extra £500 a year in taxes to pay for this.  These tax breaks do help keep air fares lower but it is the rich who benefit most from this as, by a huge margin, they take the majority of flights.  These tax-breaks mean the poor pay higher taxes to subsidise the flying habits of the rich.

we are not alone in making this demand.  All over Europe Aviation campaigners are calling for these tax-breaks to be stopped.  And there are some signs that governments, desperate for money in a recession, are beginning to listen.  But the lobbying power of the aviation industry is immense.  We need to keep up the pressure.

We pay.  Why don’t they?

Speaking on behalf of the group, Cameron said, “When VAT has just gone up to 20% for the rest of us, it is unfair that one of the dirtiest and noisiest industries in the world doesn’t pay any.”

TakeVAT have come out of the direct action group Plane Stupid.  Keep following the twitter and checking the blog for more mass actions such as Heathrow 12/02/2011 soon.

Take VAT targets aviation industry

Protesters descended on Heathrow and Leeds/Bradford Airports today in a coordinated attempt to highlight the fact that the aviation industry pays no VAT.

In a protest modelled on those recently seen at Oxford Street stores like Vodafone and Topshop by protest group UK Uncut, over 100 campaigners from TakeVAT and other direct action groups such as Plane Stupid ran around terminal 3 at Heathrow airport ‘confiscating items’.

The campaigners were symbolically ‘confiscating’ items such as luggage trolleys and toilet roll, to highlight the fact that there is no VAT on airline tickets, the purchase of planes or on spare parts for aircraft.

In January VAT rose to 20%. Hard working families across the country are being hit hardest by the rise whilst the aviation industry – which is mainly a habit of the rich, remains a special case and is completely exempt.

There were also protests in Leeds where around 20 protesters targeted Leeds/Bradford Airport. As soon as they arrived off the bus they were met by a handful of police and scuffles broke out as the protesters tried to reach the terminal building. In the end they managed to sit down together to make their point heard just outside the main terminal building.

Spokesperson for TakeVAT London said:

“It is simply unfair that aviation pays no VAT. Why should one of the dirtiest and noisiest industries in the world get away scot-free when ordinary people are charged VAT on basic necessities like toilet rolls?”

Spokesperson for TakeVAT Leeds, University of Leeds student Joseph Blake said:

“As the government imposes austerity measures on hard working families across the UK, the aviation industry gets away with £9 billion a year in VAT tax exemptions. We took action today in solidarity with the London protests and to demand the government put people first, and not climate criminals like the aviation industry”.
